چکیده

We provided fenbendazole to captive (N q 77) and free-ranging (3 study areas) white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Louisiana to determine effects on gastrointestinal nematode burdens. Fenbendazole reduced gastrointestinal nematode burdens of captive and free-ranging white-tailed deer. Mean eggs per gram of feces from captive deer decreased P<O.Ol and P<O.Ol, respectively) 89% and 84% after provision of fenbendazole in doses approximating 0.47 and 0.62 g/deer, respectively. Doses approximating 0.42-0.46 g/deer did not affect (P = 0.61) eggs per gram of feces collected from free-ranging deer. Mean eggs per gram of feces collected from free-ranging deer was affected by fenbendazole treatment (P= 0.04) and decreased an average of 86% (SE = 1.9) on the 3 study areas after provision of fenbendazole in doses approximating 1.67-1.82 g/deer. Eggs per gram of feces collected from the distal colon and abomasal parasite counts from abomasa of freeranging deer harvested on the study areas were associated positively (r = 0.706, P<O.OOl), were affected by fenbendazole treatment (P<O.Ol andP<O.Ol, respectively), and decreased 66% (SE = 5.1) and 52% (SE = 7.4), respectively, after provision of fenbendaFunding was provided by Hoeschst-Roussell Agri-Vet Company, Inc., Somerville, N.J. A reduction in the crosstransmission of gastrointestinal parasites common to deer and livestock might be possible through fenbendazole treatment of deer.

Muscleworms, Parelaphostrongylus andersoni (Nematoda: Protostrongylidae), discovered in Columbia white-tailed deer from Oregon and Washington: implications for biogeography and host associations.

Parelaphostrongylus andersoni is considered a characteristic nematode infecting white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Host and geographic distribution for this parasite, however, remain poorly defined in the region of western North America. Fecal samples collected from Columbia white-tailed deer (O. v. leucurus) in a restricted range endemic to Oregon and Washington, USA, were examined fo...

Comparative efficacy of fenbendazole and oxyclozanide-tetramisole combination against gastrointestinal nematodes in naturally infected Gaddi goats

Received: 22/01/2014 Revised: 27/02/2014 Accepted: 02/03/2014 Abstract A study was conducted to determine and compare the efficacy of fenbendazole and oxyclozanide-tetramisole combination against gastrointestinal nematodes in naturally infected Gaddi goats. On treatment, both the groups i.e. fenbendazole at 7.5 mg / kg body weight and oxyclozanide-tetramisole combination at 1 ml / 3 kg body wei...

Efficacy of oral and parenteral routes of Mycobacterium bovis bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccination against experimental bovine tuberculosis in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus): a feasibility study.

We investigated the efficacy of oral and parenteral Mycobacterium bovis bacille Calmette-Guerin Danish strain 1331 (BCG) in its ability to protect white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) against disease caused by M. bovis infection. Twenty-two white-tailed deer were divided into four groups. One group (n=5) received 10(9) colony-forming units (cfu) BCG via a lipid-formulated oral bait; one g...

Efficacy of amitraz-impregnated collars on white-tailed deer (Artiodactyla: Cervidae) in reducing free-living populations of lone star ticks (Acari: Ixodidae).

Over a 7 yr period, we monitored the effect of a commercially available, amitraz impregnated anti-tick collar in controlling free-living populations of lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum (L.) when manually fitted around necks of white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann). Study animals in treatment and control groups were confined in 38.8 ha game-fenced and densely vegetated trea...

Administering GonaConTM to white-tailed deer via hand-injection versus syringe-dart

Immunocontraceptive vaccines have shown some promise for fertility control of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in urban and suburban habitats where traditional methods of population control may not be applicable. Currently, the only contraceptive vaccine approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in white-tailed deer is GonaConTM Immunocontraceptive Vaccine, but it i...
